Changing From Wired To Wireless Doorbell

Changing from a wired to a wireless doorbell can seem like quite an undertaking if you have never done it before. However, in actuality it is very simple and can be completed in a very short time. Here, are few basic steps to help get this job completed fast:

1. Begin by turning off the electricity to the house. Although the voltage for a doorbell is low, it is better to be safe and turn off the electricity since you will be touching live wires.

2. Disconnect the wired doorbell from the wall with a screwdriver. This should be fairly easy to do as a standard flat-edge screwdriver will work just fine.

3. Take out the wires from the wired doorbell and cover each of them with electrical tape. Then, bundle them together and wrap them with electrical tape. This will help keep the wires from possible starting and fire and allow you to keep them together if you or a later homeowner happens to want to go back to a wired doorbell.

4. Push the bundled wires back into the wall so there is a nice straight surface to put in the wireless doorbell button. By having a flat surface, it will be easier to install the wireless doorbell button.

5. Put the batteries in the wireless doorbell button and place it over the space left by the wired doorbell button. For most models, the button light will light up to let you know it is working. However, check the box for details on this.

6. Choose the location in the home where you want to put the wireless bell alarm. Generally, this will be either

a battery operated alarm or a plug-in version. The battery operated ones can be placed anywhere and the plug-in ones must be put in an electrical outlet.

7. Turn on the bell alarm and go test out the doorbell. Have a friend or loved one, press the doorbell as you go to different rooms of the house to see if you can hear the doorbell. If you are satisfied with the sound and range, you are done. However, if you are not, you can make changes to the chime sound or add additional bell alarms to expand the range of the doorbell or add on another unique chime for the backdoor or garage door.

After you have tested out your wireless doorbell, your installation is complete. If you have any issues with frequency interference or still have range issues even after adding amplifiers, you will want to make an upgrade to a better wireless doorbell model. The higher end versions offer more frequencies to block out outside interference and have longer ranges as long range wireless doorbells can extend from 300 to 450 ft in sound range. Regardless, we think you will find a wireless doorbell is a welcome addition to your home. Treat it well as you can not only get good use out of it, you can also take it with you if you move.
