The Wired Doorbell

The old mainstay (Wired Doorbell) has been a must-have for all homes since the 1900s.  Although the wireless doorbell is currently getting more of the recent publicity, the benefits of the wired doorbell will always make it a staple in most homes.  Here, is a run down of its features and limitations:

Price

Wired doorbells tend to be slightly cheaper than comparable wireless models.  The wired doorbell has a price range of $15 to $125.  In addition, they do not require batteries so money can be saved here.  However, the installation may offset this cost depending on whether you do it yourself or have an electrician do it.

Range

Since there is a direct line from the button to the bell receiver, the sound of the signal will be stronger.  Also, the sound range can be quite large as its range is only limited by the length of the wires.  The arguments for wired models regarding range are similar to the arguments you would find in comparing wireless network computer systems with wired network computer systems.  The advantages for wired are its ability to reach farther ranges, have a stronger signal and tend to be more permanent.  The disadvantages are the cost of running wires through the house and a lack of flexibility in bell receiver locations.

Energy Source

Since wired doorbells do not use a battery, you only need to replace the unit when the system wears out.  This means the wired doorbell lasts a long time.  They can last for well over 10 years.

Sounds and Chimes

Wired doorbells offer all the same sounds and chimes as wireless doorbells.  You have some models which include the basic chimes like Westminster and Ding Dong and some models which allow for more unique songs and chimes like Halloween sounds and even College fight songs.

Amplifiers or Sound Extenders

Wired doorbells offer additional amplifiers and sound extenders.  Even some wireless versions can be used to amplify the existing wired system.  This can especially come in handy for out of the way rooms like a basement or a back room.

Button Designs

Wired doorbells have a large amount of selection to choose from than wireless doorbell models.  Most of this is due to demand and the newness of wireless models.  Regardless, you are currently able to find a much wider selection of button designs to meet your personality and aesthetic needs.

Limitations

Wired Doorbells do not have much portability due to the limitations of needing wires.  This can become a challenge when the house is remodeled or additional rooms are added to the house.

In the final analysis, the Wired Doorbell is a solid addition to any home.  With its main benefits of signal strength and sound quality, it will continue to be sought after by homeowners.  For more information on questions to consider before a purchase, check out ourBuying Checklist.
